To A God Unknown by John Steinbeck First Edition, First printing, First State $3500.00
Robert O. Ballou, New York, 1933. John Steinbeck’s scarce third book in very good condition. This Ballou imprint is first state of which only 598 copies were printed. Ballou sold the rest of the sheets to Covici Friede which produced the second run of this book. (Later in 1935). Early Steinbeck showing his art form developing quickly finding his voice as a serious writer about nature, man and God. The book is clean and tight with no owner’s signatures, bookplates or other markings with a slightly lightened spine in a non price clipped dust jacket with slight tanning to letters on spine, small quarter inch chip to the top of the spine as shown in the picture. The front panel of the dust jacket is vivid and rich, the back panel has foxing primarily to the top third. A rare Steinbeck first edition at an excellent price compared to market.
