The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne First Edition, First Printing, First State $7,500.00.
Ticknor, Reed & Fields, New York, 1850. One of the major cornerstones of literature and one of the very first American novels. All original, no restoration, proud Ticknor engraved brown cloth boards. Both first issue points with March 1850 ads in front and “reduplicate” instead of “repudiate” at line 20 on page 21. There is general wear to the boards as shown in the picture but still rating very good. The gilt is strong and the pages without foxing and generally very clean and the book appears unread due to the still tight binding. The paper at the front gutter has some loss to it as shown in the picture but the hinge is intact. (A small strip of archival cloth is included to lay over it). A very good collectible copy of this true first printing of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne complete and beautiful.
