The Old Man And The Sea by Ernest Hemingway First edition, first printing, first state $1250.00
Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, 1952. First issue, with the photograph of Hemingway on the rear panel printed with a strong blue hue, Scribner’s A and brown type printed flaps (as opposed to Black which was used later). The blue hue was later changed to olive green at Hemingway’s insistence and the mention of Hemingway winning the Nobel Prize was added to later dust jackets. Winner of the Pulitzer for Hemingway and lead to his being awarded the Nobel Prize. Hanneman A24.A. Jacket lightly sunned at edges with few minor abrasions at corners. The book itself has some light wear along the spine with some of the silver lettering rubbed. An owner’s stamp hidden underneath the non-price clipped jacket flap. Similar copies are about $3500 on AbeBooks (our books are not on AbeBooks). A very good copy of this true first of modern high spots and one of the best books from a literary giant in the proper true first edition state. This is a collectible copy of the true first edition of The Old Man and The Sea. The waviness on the front panel is caused by the Mylar reflection on the photo.
