London: Chapman and Hall, 1862. Second edition, first one-volume edition. Octavo. [6], 524 pages. With wood-engraved title vignette and frontispiece by Dalziell. Publisher's brown morocco-grain cloth, stamped in blind and gilt, expertly repaired at spine head and tail, with beautiful dark brown endpapers. Condition: Minor edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed, faint staining to upper board, spine rubbed, head and tail pushed. Hinges repaired; bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, bookplate of Joshua H. Hutchinson to same, pencil notations to half-title. Text block edges toned, top edge soiled and untrimmed, other edges rough-trimmed; foxing to preliminaries, thumbed lightly throughout, a few corners creased. Very good. References: Gimbel A148; Smith 14. Very scarce and very collectible condition. Gilt exceptional on the spine. Beautiful publisher embossed original boards with very good texture.
