Philadelphia 1882. The “suppressed Boston sixth edition”, published in Philadelphia after the sixth edition published in Boston by James Osgood with a few hundred sheets got run out of town by the district attorney in Boston who objected to the “sexual content”and the “obscene literature” of Leaves of Grass. Whitman transferred the work from Boston and had his book published in Philadelphia instead. One of only approximately 6000 copies printed and an exceptional one with bright original yellow mustard clean boards with sharp corners and bright strong gilt to the front board and the spine with a touch of wear to the top and bottom of the spine. A very small owner’s bookplate at the top of the front pastedown. “Walt Whitman’s Books” publisher’s advertising slip tipped onto the front flyleaf. Book and leaves internally clean. The portait of the young Whitman across from page 29 and fittingly before Song of Myself is in near fine condition protected by a beautiful offset to the fine tissue guard paper. Hard to find editions of Leaves of Grass published during the author’s lifetime in this very good to near fine condition.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Walt Whitman","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":48789422571725,"sku":null,"price":1500.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0648\/3751\/7517\/files\/IMG_1651.jpg?v=1788187743","url":"https:\/\/windersrarebooks.com\/products\/leaves-of-grass","provider":"Winders Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
